10 Million Marks, Germany, 1923

  • Rs. 400.00

10 Million mark banknote of Germany, issued by the Reichsbank in 1923. These notes are from the post World War I period (the Weimer Republic) in Germany - when the country faced hyperinflation. The hyperinflation was caused by the debt that Germany had taken on to finance the War, and was triggered by a Franco-Belgian occupation of the industrial district of Ruhr - to force Germany to pay a war indemnity. When prices rise by over 50% in a month, it is considered a case of hyperinflation. At its worst phase, prices of goods in Germany would change daily - sometimes the prices of food in a restaurant would change while the patrons were dining! The German hyperinflation and the consequent economic suffering was one of the factors that led to the rise of Hitler.

The front of the note carries the denomination, and a declaration by the Reichsbank, along with Germany's emblem - an eagle. The reverse is blank. The simple design of these notes also shows that they were designed and brought into circulation quickly.

Size: 125 mm* 80 mm
