1 Escudo copper-nickel coins from Portuguese India (Goa, Daman & Diu), minted in 1958 and 1959. The Escudo was the currency of Portuguese India from 1958-1961. The obverse of the coin features the shield of Portugal on a lined circle, at the center of a Maltese cross. The reverse features the coat of arms of Portuguese India. The Escudo replaced the 'Rupia' - the Portuguese version of the Rupee at the rate of 6 Escudos to 1 Rupia. 

Goa was liberated by the Indian armed forces in 1961 - up to that time, it had a different currency from rest of the country. Portuguese rule in India began in early 1500s and lasted till 1961.
