1 Rupee, East India Company, 1840 DL, Madras Mint

  • Rs. 2,000.00

Silver Rupee coins minted in the name of Queen Victoria by the East India Company with the date 1840. These coins were minted in the Madras Mint - their size is slightly larger than coins from other mints (Calcutta and Bombay). The first mint was established in Madras in 1640, and finally closed in 1869.

These coins were minted in Calcutta, Bombay and Madras mints. This design is known as Divided Legend - as the words 'Queen Victoria' are divided into two parts by the Queen's head. The obverse has the young head of Queen Victoria, while the reverse features the words 'One Rupee' inside a wreath. These are high grade coins - note the hair on Victoria's head - a fine feature which is the first to get rubbed off, is intact on most of the coins.

Compared to other coins of British India, these are relatively rare as they are much older. Madras mint coins are rarer compared to coins from the other mints. This grade is hard to find. 'WW' - the initials of the engraver William Wyon, are clearly visible on the coins.
