1 Karshapana, Magadh Janpada (pre Christian era)

Silver punch marked coinage (PMC) of the Magadha Janapada, one of the 16 mahajanpadas of the second urbanization period (600-200 BC). These coins are the silver currency known as Karshapana, and weigh approximately 3.3-3.5 grams - though many coins are lighter due to wear and tear, due to these extreme age. These coins were produced by punching patterns on silver planchettes - common motifs include the sun, elephant, bull and chaitya hill. Coins are of different varieties and may date from Magadha Janapada and the Mauryan Empire (322-185 BC). The punch marked patterns are mostly on one side, with the other side either blank or with a single mark.
