Baroda Princely State
Baroda State, ruled by the Gaekwads, was founded in 1721 - as one of the powerful Maratha chiefs. After 1818, Baroda became a British protectorate. Baroda was the first princely state in India to build a railway line - the Gaekwar Baroda State Railway - a narrow gauge railway line. There are two features common to most coins of Baroda - the first letter of the ruler's name in Devnagari script, and a curved scimitar.
