Hyderabad

Hyderabad, Coins, Silver, Rupee, Nizam

Coins of the Hyderabad Princely State, ruled by the Nizam. The Nizams were originally viceroys of the Mughals in the Deccan, and became independent rulers as the Mughal empire declined.

Hyderabad was one of the major princely states to issue its own coins in gold, silver and copper. The later coins of Hyderabad - 1902 onward, have the iconic Charminar, with small differences in design indicating the name of the ruler.

At the time of independence, Hyderabad was the largest Princely State in India and the Nizam tried to secede into an independent country. Hyderabad was united with India after a military action, Operation Polo.
